How To Design A Vaporizer

Over at syxdesign, we are all about creating new and interesting designs for consumer products. If you look at something like the Apple Ipod, part of the reason for its massive success was it excellent design. We believe that products can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Apple has proven that over and over again with their devices.

Apple ipod touch

There are other items where design is of paramount importance. Of course, this applies to fashion. But it can even apply to something like a musical instruments. Everyone knows the shape of the Gibson Les Paul guitar, the model favored by Slash of the band Guns N Roses.

Another type of device that we find it interesting to evalute from a design point of view is a vaporizer. There’s over 20 different models of vaporizers on the market today, and they widely vary in their appearance. If you consider something like the Arizer Extreme Q vaporizer, it has a cool futuristic look, sort of like a nuclear power plant. There is a big improvement over those cheap boxy vapes they make in China and sell for fifty bucks. The Arizer even comes with a remote control, which is a really nice touch.

But there’s also other vapes that have interesting designs. If you look at something like the Magic Flight Launch Box, it’s basically just what the name implies – a small rectangular box. Yet, there’s quite a bit of intriguing engineering that goes into this little thing. With vaporizers, it’s not always necessary to have a lot of bells and whistles. As long as it gets the job done and the vapor path is clean glass, then you’re in good shape.

There’s also a huge design component when you think about automobiles. Look at cars from the seventies – they have a very boxy shape with hard straight lines. Nowadays, edges are curved and rounded. This not only makes the car more aerodynamic, but also gives it a more attactive shape.

Where to Find Reliable Juicer Reviews

There has been a trend over the last few years for people to try and make money using websites. This is a legitimate way to make a living however, there are now so many phoney websites that purport to “review” certain products however it is obvious just by reading through that whoever wrote the “review” has no real idea about how the product actually works. When reading about topics that I am not so familiar with, this is much harder to spot. One area that I do know a lot about is diet and health. So it is obvious to me when a site actually offers reliable juicer reviews and when it doesn’t.

What I recommend when you are looking at any review site is to look for signs that the person who is writing the “review” has actually used the product themselves. Do they talk in broad generalizations or do they talk in the first person, using examples such as:

What I like about this juicer is that …

The reason I prefer this model is because …

If the site simply has a list of features that you can find on the manufacturer’s website then they are not offering any real value to you.

Another feature that is useful in deciding which juicer to purchase is whether or not the “review” website offers videos of the machines. In the same way that a picture tells a thousand words, a video is so informative and can really help you to understand how the devices operate.

A further difference between real and fake review sites is whether or not they provide useful links. On any site that is “reviewing” a particular product, they should offer, easy to find, link to the manufacturers of the products. Ask yourself whether the “review” site is helping to educate you or whether they are just trying to push to a sales page so that you buy the product. You may not know this but for each sale that is generated, a small commission is made. As I said above, this is fair, provided that the writer has actually helped you to understand more about the juicer that you’re going to buy.

If you are looking to improve your health and fitness levels then a juicing appliance for your home really is going to help. It’s a fun way to involve the whole family in getting better quality nutrition. We ignore the saying, you are what you eat, at our peril.

There are more and more reports discussing the health benefits of juicing. Why not find out how Juice can prevent clogged arteries on the BBC News website? With just a little effort, we can achieve some amazing results. I hope that you spend the time to find genuine juicer reviews so that you know exactly what you are buying.

This video clearly shows that this guy bought this juicer and knows what he’s talking about.

Eyebrow Tattoo versus Micro Pigmentation

While it’s common to use the term eyebrow tattoo when referring to the procedure that creates false brows using a machine that implants ink or pigment into the dermis, it’s more accurate to call it micro pigmentation.

Is there a difference between cosmetic tattooing and micropigmentation?

Permanent makeup has come a long way since its inception. Originally, a tattoo, whether artistic or cosmetic, employed similar techniques, equipment and inks. The first eyebrow tattoos were essentially dark brown or solid black lines, shaped like eyebrows, but not very natural looking. Women who chose to get an eyebrow tattoo often had a penchant for a theatrical look, in fact, it was common for women to have their natural eyebrows eliminated with electrolysis prior to getting a tattoo. This lead to a harsh look, often with overly accentuated arches, thick lines and dramatic wispy ends. That changed when hand-help devices were introduced.

Small hand-held, multi-speed, digital, machines offered not only a more hygienic approach to implanting color under the skin, especially in sensitive facial areas, using disposable micro-needles, but were also well suited to vegetable pigments that could be blended to provide softer colors. These lightweight devices allowed aestheticians and technicians to do delicate, detailed work; blend colors, shape brows, correct small imperfections, fill gaps in sparse areas without affecting natural hair, while still adding touches of color to provide better brow definition.

Today, permanent makeup specialists / micropigmentation technicians are highly skilled cosmetic professionals who can become certified / accredited in their industry. Almost all micropigmentation for cosmetic purposes is done in a clinic or aesthetic / beauty salon under the care of a certified cosmetician / technician. These cosmetic tattooing professionals have studied and apply techniques like feathering to create tiny hair-like lines that resemble real brows, apply soft shadows below natural hair to give the illusion of fullness, and blend pigment to provide realistic colors to match hair and skin tone.

Although micropigmentation specialists, who offer permanent makeup services on eyebrows, eyes and lips, may still use the word tattoo, the brows that can be created today, in most cases, have very little to do with the dramatic eyebrow tattoo results of yesteryears.

Amazon Kindle Touch Screen

The design of the new Kindle Touch is a work of art. While the screen area is the same 6″ size as the Kindle 3G, the height and width of the device are actually smaller. This is primarily because it doesn’t have a keyboard like the earlier versions of the reader. One thing that you should be aware of though is that the depth of the new Kindle is actually a bit thicker. That said, it is lighter. So overall, the new Touch reader from Amazon is sure to be a more enjoyable reading experience. That assumes of course that the touch functionality that is its main selling point actually delivers the anticipated user experience.

I’m hoping that the new e-ink display is going to be even crisper than my current reader. When it comes to finding a cheap Kindle Touch there are a couple of ways you can reduce the amount that you spend. The first choice that you have is whether to go for the Wi-Fi only version or the Wi-Fi and 3G unit. Going for the Wi-Fi only model will save $50. There’s another option which allows us to save money. That’s if we pick a Kindle with Special Offers. This provides a saving of $40. So by adding these two savings together, the price differential from the most expensive to the cheapest Touch model is $90.

Whether you must have 3G or really don’t want to see adverts on your handset are choices that only you can make. It is fair to say though that by offering us the choice, Amazon are doing their best to cater to all of our wants and needs. This article, Amazon Fires Barrage at Apple, in The Atlantic discusses more about Amazon’s marketing strategy.

You can see from the picture above that the Kindle Touch is the smaller of the two. But at the same time, don’t forget that it still has the same screen area. Rather than using the physical keyboard of the 3rd generation Kindle reader, everything is controlled by touching the screen of the newer version.

Only time will tell if the Kindle using public love it as much as the current readers that we have. If past experience is anything to go by, I’m sure that it is going to offer a great user experience. For me, the Amazon Kindle Fire is a different type of device entirely. I think it will be great. But when I think of Kindle, I imagine an electronic book reader. That’s what I see in the new Amazon Kindle Touch.

Why I Hate Guitar Hero

I’ve got nothing against having a bit of fun with a computer game now and then, but I feel I need to speak out against the pernicious and ill-conceived waste of time that is “Guitar Hero“.

Let’s take a minute to examine what Guitar Hero actually is. According to Wikipedia:

The Guitar Hero series (sometimes referred to as the Hero series)[1] is a series of music video games first published in 2005 by RedOctane and Harmonix Music Systems, and distributed by Activision, in which players use a guitar-shaped game controller to simulate playing lead, bass guitar, and rhythm guitar across numerous rock music songs. Players match notes that scroll on-screen to colored fret buttons on the controller, strumming the controller in time to the music in order to score points, and keep the virtual audience excited. The games attempt to mimic many features of playing a real guitar, including the use of fast-fingering hammer-ons and pull-offs and the use of the whammy bar to alter the pitch of notes. Most games support single player modes, typically a Career mode to play through all the songs in the game, and both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes.

So we’re clear then, this expensive toy attempts to mimic the playing of a guitar. That would be fine if somehow the playing of the game had any benefit in terms of improving one’s ability to play a real guitar. But Guitar Hero does not do this. It does not even, in my experience, encourage non-musicians to take up playing the guitar. And even if it did, these eager new guitarists would soon find that their so-called skills developed playing the stupid game are not in the least transferable to the real life instrument.

No surprises there really. I mean does anyone really believe that pressing some coloured buttons on a cleverly-wired plank of wood in time to some coloured dots on a TV screen will make anyone better at playing the guitar? I hope not.

In fact, I know some excellent guitarists who have tried to play Guitar Hero, with very mixed results. Picture the scene towards the end of the party, the dancing has fizzled out, the tunes on the stereo have been turned down low so as not to disturb the neighbours, and various guests have raided the kitchen cupboards in search of something to satisfy their alcohol-induced craving for food.

Some bright spark decides to get the games console out and fires up Guitar Hero. “Come on Dave”, he cries, “you’re the guitarist, show us all how it’s done”.

So Dave picks up the guitar-shaped controller and starts pressing buttons in time to the prompts on the screen.

So far so good.

But then he starts making mistakes and it’s not long before he gives up and some idiot who’s spent the previous 2 weeks glued to the TV in his bedroom practising to play the game gets a new high score. The guy is so impressed that he gloats that he’s a better guitarist than Dave, who has chosen not to waste his time perfecting the pressing of plastic buttons, but has actually been playing his Les Paul original and writing some cool songs that others will be enjoying at the gig he’s putting on with the rest of his band next Saturday night down at the club.

Who’s the real loser here? It certainly ain’t the developers or distributors of the game. But the guy who’s poking fun at Dave is kinda missing the point.

Guitar Hero does not enhance musical ability in any way shape or form. There is no transfer of any skill from coloured button to fretboard. In fact a high level of skill in one will detract from one’s ability in the other.

Guitar Hero is damaging the musical ability of our nation and we must stand and fight before it’s too late.

I urge you all to chuck your games consoles in the trash and buy a real guitar. You’ll be glad you did, and your country will thank you for it. So get down to your local music store, or log on to Amazon and buy yourself a nice guitar, the best you can afford, and learn to play guitar.

P.S. Yes, I’m Dave and I suck at Guitar Hero. If you’d like to catch me and my buddies playing our latest songs live, head on down to the Blue Oyster Bar in downtown Manhattan every second Saturday. It would be great to see you there!

Helpful Information about Koh Samui

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second biggest island and one of its most popular tourist destinations. Ever since it was discovered in the early 1970s by two backpackers the island has attracted a growing number of visitors to its shores. They come to experience the beautiful beaches, warm water, exciting nightlife and warm Thai hospitality.

Since its inception as a tourist area, Koh Samui has developed quickly. It now has excellent infrastructure which includes an extensive paved road system, modern and well equipped hospitals, supermarkets, an airport and even a decompression chamber for divers. It is this developed state combined with cheap prices for food and drink, year round sunshine and lots of beaches that gives Koh Samui its winning formula.

Koh Samui Beaches

The most popular beaches on Koh Samui are Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut. Chaweng has the longest beach and the biggest urban area. Here you will find many resorts, hotels, bars and restaurants. There’s live music, strip shows and bars where ladies are looking for customers. Lamai is more of the same but slightly smaller. Lamai also has a couple of good night clubs and two places showing Muay Thai fights.

Bophut is more sophisticated. There are no sex workers and the original Chinese wooden fisherman’s homes have been converted into cool bars, cafes and restaurants. The beach at Bophut is free of traffic because there is no beach road.

Maenam is the backpacker area of Koh Samui. It is located on the north coast next to Bophut. It has a convenient port for catching a boat to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. The long beach at Maenam is not great for swimming but has plenty of tree cover and also great accommodation deals.

The south and west coasts of Koh Samui have some beaches that are quiet and less developed such as Laem Set, Lipa Noi, Baan Bang Kao and Taling Ngam. These beaches have few bars and don’t attract the nightlife crowd. Rather couples, pensioners and package tourists often use the hotels on these beaches.

In general prices for Koh Samui accommodation starts at about $30 a night and goes up to $1,000 a night in the high season for private pool villas. There are also private villas to rent, often at knock down prices. Hilton has a resort on Taling Ngam called the Conrad Koh Samui. Marriot and Amari also have resorts on Koh Samui.

Attractions and Things to do in Koh Samui

There are plenty of gyms around the island. Some of the luxury hotels have their own fitness centers. There are also places like the Kamalaya on Laem Set that specialize in holistic treatments such as yoga, Pilates, tai chi and meditation.

Less spiritual pursuits include diving, golf, go kart racing and canopy zip lines. There is also a tiger show, a butterfly garden and an aquarium to visit. For those looking for Thai culture there are a number of temples or Wats on Koh Samui. These include the famous 12 meter high golden Buddha at Bang Rak and Wat Khunaram that houses a 30 year old mummified monk.

In short there is plenty to see and do in Koh Samui. There’s also a jazz festival and marathon in September.

Koh Samui – the Final Word

People either love or hate Koh Samui. It has exciting nightlife and plenty to do but many people are put off by the seedy nature of Chaweng and Lamai. The island has great facilities and amenities but tends to put its prices up too often. The taxi drivers never go on the meter and are immune to negotiation. Parts of the island feel over developed and nature has suffered as a consequence. The backpackers that used to stay on Koh Samui have long since moved onto cheaper islands. For all these negative points, Koh Samui is still a paradise island that people visit over and over again.

Dog Training Collars – What is the Best Design?

Closeup picture of dog lead ataching to collar.

I have an unruly mongrel called Dylan who needs to be taken in hand. He is a rescue dog that I brought home from the local dog rescue centre a couple of months ago.

I was warned by the guys at the centre that he was a little wild and might need some tough love to help him settle into family life. I should have listened to them!

I’ve tried all my usual techniques and I have a lot of patience when it comes to training dogs, but I’ve reached the stage now where I think that I need to give myself a bit of help in the form of a dog training collar.

I’ve been thinking about the pros and cons of using different types of collar and thought it would be an interesting thing to talk about here on the blog. After all, design is an important consideration when it comes to the choice of dog collar and how effective each one is in assisting with dog training.

Here are my thoughts…

Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars are a tried and tested aid to training your dog and come in various different designs.

The first one that most people think of when I mention training collars is the slip collar, which is simple but effective. Other options could include a halter type design, or if you like high tech solutions, you could try an electric shock collar.

Slip Collars for Dogs

Slip collars are probably the most commonly used training collars and are very simple in design. Popularised in the late 1970s and early 80s by Barbara Woodhouse, They are just a length of chain with a ring at one end through which you pass the bight of the chain itself. This forms a loop that can be placed over the head of your dog in the normal way that you would put a collar on him. The key difference with a slip collar is that it tightens up when it is pulled.

Most people mis-use the slip collar by allowing the dog to pull constantly on the lead resulting in the slip collar tightening around the dog’s neck. This mistake is exacerbated by the common, and egregiously inappropriate name used by many, “choke chain”.

If you’re choking your dog, you’re using the collar incorrectly and you could be harming your dog in the process.

The correct way to use the slip collar is by applying a sharp jerk to the lead when the dog is behaving incorrectly. This gives him the instant feedback that he needs for effective training.

Other types of collar

There are other types of collar available, including the electric shock collar and the halter. I wouldn’t recommend the electric shock collar because it is very hard to get good results with because they require an excellent understanding of training theory and, if you’re not careful, you can end up confusing the dog.

The halter has its place but you’re unlikely to find it an effective tool for difficult or mischievous dogs.

So, in summary, I would say that the best design for a first-choice dog collar is the slip collar. This is because it combines simplicity and durability with effectiveness. In addition, a chain looks attractive and suits most dogs of whatever breed or hair colour. It really is a winning design.

Don’t Give Up Your Luxuries! Save Money and Still Dine Out

Dining out is one of life’s simple pleasures. It is often seen as a delicious treat to get away from the hustle and bustle of our work and bond with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, it is also one of the first luxuries to get nixed when we go on a budget and start cutting back on extras.

But what if you could still enjoy an evening at a restaurant for the same cost as eating at home? That’s what we tackle in our article as we take a look at the smart ways to dine out and stay on your budget.

Where to Eat

One of the very first considerations you will have to take into account is that of your restaurant of choice. The safest (at least budget-wise) and, of course, the most affordable options are the fast food joints that are found on almost every corner. Health-wise, these are a bad choice. We are trying to save money, not destroy our health.

For very little additional money, we can go to a bistro, café, or grill restaurant that provide much better nutrition and taste for the buck. Look beyond their menu prices and check if the restaurant has a free kids buffet, special promos and discounts for specific days of the week, or a printable online coupon for a free appetizer or 2 for 1 entree. This can easily make the costs equivalent or better than a meal at home, or cheap fast food.

What to Order

Once seated, immediately scan their available appetizers and entrees. A great tip to trim down your bill is to order two sets of appetizers instead of a more expensive entrée. Additionally, you can reduce your hunger pangs by chomping on their free bread or soup before pouncing on your main course. This makes it much easier to split a tab between you and a friend, as most restaurants today serve incredibly large servings that can feed two or even three people, depending on the appetite.

Desserts will also cost you dearly. If after a meal, you still have a craving for something sweet, why not just stop by a local ice cream shop which is much cheaper yet still equally satisfying.

When to Eat Out

For some, eating out is therapeutic. If you have a terrible meeting at work and feel like eating out to lighten your mood, then choose to do it at lunch rather than at dinner time when menu prices go up. Bistros and cafes work hard to earn your afternoon traffic which is why their lunch specials are priced much lower than their dinner entrees.  But if dinner is the only free time you have to go out and eat, then make sure to surf the net and search for discounts like the Sonny’s Barbecue coupons mentioned at Bluwiki.com to drastically reduce your final bill.

What to Drink

Instead of ordering pricey fruit juices, wines, or soda, why not opt for water instead. Not only is it free but it also does not have any fattening sugar that can put on the extra pounds. This small change can save you $2 to $10 a meal, which quickly translates into some serious cash over the span of several months.

Time your dining right, order the your meals smartly, research for discounts, and cut out the unnecessary extras to make your trip to the restaurant fit in just fine with your budget plans. As you can see, it is possible to give yourself a night off from cooking and a little luxury for a similar cost of eating at home or a quick bite at a fast food joint. Don’t settle for less when good food in a relaxing atmosphere is within your reach.

Dancing under a Full Moon

There is something special about the moon. It is the basis of calendars, it controls the tidal movements; the moon symbolizes change, inconstancy, imagination and madness. The sight of the full moon on the tropical island of Koh Phangan is particularly impressive. It seems bigger and brighter. When the moon reaches its maximum size the town of Haad Rin on the Thai island of Koh Phangan changes – the town becomes gripped with moon fever.

The Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan is the biggest monthly beach party in the world. It is an unforgettable event. People come from all over the globe to celebrate the moon, dance all night, make new friends and go a little bit crazy.

The party takes over all of the small town of Haad Rin. The center of the party, however, is the longer sunrise beach. Here there are about 10 bars each with an impressive bank of loud speakers providing the tunes. Each bar sticks to one genre of music so it is easy for party goers to find a style that suits them. There is chart music, RnB, house, drum and bass, and of course Koh Phangan’s distinctive psy-trance sound.

At the same time there are fire dancing displays, limbo contests and fireworks. Although the party is full of youthful energy and high spirits, it is a peaceful event that goes off without major incident. There are volunteers organizing safe areas for people to sleep; paramedics are on hand and the police patrol the area.

The party goes on throughout the night unabated. People watch the sun rise over the ocean. As the party winds down at around 11am many of the party goers still gripped by party fever head off to the nearby Backyard Party where the best of the DJs from the night before spin big tunes.

For those interested in going to the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin it is essential to organize accommodation well in advance. Some bungalow resorts operate a first come first served system and won’t take phone or internet bookings. Other places do accept online reservations. All resorts, hotels and bungalow outfits enforce a minimum stay requirement of at least 3 days. The alternative is to stay on one of Koh Phangan’s other beaches, or to stay on the neighboring island of Koh Samui and take the Haad Rin Queen ferry to the party. All those who arrive on the night of the Full Moon Party have to pay 100 Thai Baht entry fee. That’s about $3 which is amazing value.

Finally, remember not to accept drinks from strangers and try to break up the alcoholic intake with a bottle of water occasionally as it is easy to dehydrate. Enjoy the party and stay safe!
