When I first went to Koh Phangan in the late 1990s it was an obscure backwater in Thailand. It was mostly hippies and a few gap year backpackers that seemed to know about the delights of Koh Phangan. I’m glad someone I was working with in China told me about Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan, because since that first visit I’ve been going back to the tropical island of Koh Phangan as regularly as I can. A few years ago I even managed to live on Koh Phangan for a year. It was a magical if unproductive time in my life that saw me finally fulfill an ambition of being able to say that I lived on a beach. Koh Phangan in the years that I have been visiting the island has changed considerably. Haad Rin used to be a collection of cheap bungalows with bars, cafes and restaurants [...]

Although the lion’s share of tourists tend to gravitate to Koh Samui, Phuket and Chiang Mai in Thailand there is a lot to recommend Phang-Nga Province in the south of Thailand. It is an area that has several great places to visit and things to do. For those who regularly make it out to Phang-Nga Province they are probably more than happy that tourists are not descending on the area in droves. The most famous beaches in Phang-Nga are in Khao Lak. This is an area of long powdery sand beaches that stretch on as far the eyes can see. The main beach of Nang Tong is where most of the shops, bars, banks, dive shops etc. are found. Just north of Nang Tong is the slightly quieter Bang Niang beach. North of this beach are Khuk Khak, Pakarang and Bangsak. They are all idyllic spots far from the madding [...]

There is something special about the moon. It is the basis of calendars, it controls the tidal movements; the moon symbolizes change, inconstancy, imagination and madness. The sight of the full moon on the tropical island of Koh Phangan is particularly impressive. It seems bigger and brighter. When the moon reaches its maximum size the town of Haad Rin on the Thai island of Koh Phangan changes – the town becomes gripped with moon fever. The Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan is the biggest monthly beach party in the world. It is an unforgettable event. People come from all over the globe to celebrate the moon, dance all night, make new friends and go a little bit crazy. The party takes over all of the small town of Haad Rin. The center of the party, however, is the longer sunrise beach. Here there are about 10 bars each with [...]

Buying a programmable thermostat makes sense for two main reasons: it reduces both heating and cooling bills, and it reduces the carbon emissions from power plants that make electricity. Thus, programmable thermostats are good for your bank balanced and good for the environment. This post will explore in more detail just how a programmable thermostat can help you be more comfortable in your home and save you money. Programmable thermostats are not just for lazy people. It is virtually impossible to achieve the same savings by manually changing the temperature on an old thermostat. Typically, a programmable thermostat will have 4 periods per program. These are wake, leave, return and sleep. By setting these periods to match your schedule you can avoid heating or cooling a home unnecessarily. For every 8 hour period you set back your set point by 1 degree you save 1% on your heating / cooling [...]

Dining out is one of life’s simple pleasures. It is often seen as a delicious treat to get away from the hustle and bustle of our work and bond with friends and loved ones. Unfortunately, it is also one of the first luxuries to get nixed when we go on a budget and start cutting back on extras. But what if you could still enjoy an evening at a restaurant for the same cost as eating at home? That’s what we tackle in our article as we take a look at the smart ways to dine out and stay on your budget. Where to Eat One of the very first considerations you will have to take into account is that of your restaurant of choice. The safest (at least budget-wise) and, of course, the most affordable options are the fast food joints that are found on almost every corner. Health-wise, [...]

Photo by theilr I have an unruly mongrel called Dylan who needs to be taken in hand. He is a rescue dog that I brought home from the local dog rescue centre a couple of months ago. I was warned by the guys at the centre that he was a little wild and might need some tough love to help him settle into family life. I should have listened to them! I’ve tried all my usual techniques and I have a lot of patience when it comes to training dogs, but I’ve reached the stage now where I think that I need to give myself a bit of help in the form of a dog training collar. I’ve been thinking about the pros and cons of using different types of collar and thought it would be an interesting thing to talk about here on the blog. After all, design is [...]

Koh Samui has an airport, big supermarkets, luxury hotels and modern hospitals and attracts those for whom these things are important. Koh Phangan is less developed but draws hundreds of thousands of people every year to its world famous Full Moon Party. Koh Tao’s claim to fame is its diving. Those who aren’t interested in learning how to dive are put off going to Koh Tao as they don’t want to be surrounded by people who talk about diving all day. Although there are over 30 dive shops on the island, it is not the only reason to visit Koh Tao. For many it is the unspoiled nature, beautiful beaches and cheap prices that make Koh Tao worth visiting. The west coast of Koh Tao [...]

There are several reasons to buy cork flooring. It is a type of flooring that is both environmentally friendly and strong. It is also flooring that is safe for a home. This post will explore the beneficial properties of cork flooring. Cork flooring is classified as sustainable flooring because it becomes from a renewable resource. The cork oak tree grows nearly exclusively in Southern Europe and Northern Africa. It takes only 25 years to mature and then it is ready to be harvested. This is done by peeling off the bark. This process if done correctly does not damage the tree. Every 12 years the bark grows back and can be used. Cork can be taken without damaging the tree or destroying natural habitat. The green nature of cork flooring is one important reason to buy cork flooring. Another reason to purchase cork flooring is that it is very hardwearing [...]

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second biggest island and one of its most popular tourist destinations. Ever since it was discovered in the early 1970s by two backpackers the island has attracted a growing number of visitors to its shores. They come to experience the beautiful beaches, warm water, exciting nightlife and warm Thai hospitality. Since its inception as a tourist area, Koh Samui has developed quickly. It now has excellent infrastructure which includes an extensive paved road system, modern and well equipped hospitals, supermarkets, an airport and even a decompression chamber for divers. It is this developed state combined with cheap prices for food and drink, year round sunshine and lots of beaches that gives Koh Samui its winning formula. Koh Samui Beaches The most popular beaches on Koh Samui are Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut. Chaweng has the longest beach and the biggest urban area. Here you will find many [...]
