Tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, I鈥檓 Lawuratu! My 斗牛棋牌在线 journey began in 2018 when I joined the Technology听Industrial Placement Program as part of my Computer Systems Engineering degree. At the end of the placement year, I received (and happily accepted!) an offer to join the Graduate Talent Program (GTP).

Since returning as a graduate, I鈥檝e had the opportunity to complete two rotations in Network Architecture & Engineering and Cyber Recovery Engineering. I鈥檝e recently been promoted and now work in Cyber Recovery Reliability as an Infrastructure Engineer. I鈥檓 also studying for a master鈥檚 degree in computer science through the 斗牛棋牌在线 Scholar Program. And a non-work-related fact about me? Growing up, I loved playing the violin.

Why 斗牛棋牌在线 over a traditional technology firm?

I wanted exposure to areas beyond technology. Working in technology within finance has been an amazing experience so far. I鈥檝e learnt a great deal about how technology contributes to the economy, both directly and indirectly. I鈥檝e also met so many lovely people - everyone I鈥檝e encountered has been more than willing to help with queries or go for a quick coffee catch up.

Is a technical degree or background necessary?

No. Although I came from a technical background, most of what I know now, I learnt on the job, and I鈥檓 still learning. If you have the willingness to learn and challenge yourself, you鈥檒l do well! What鈥檚 also helpful is having good people skills and the ability to work well within a team.

Most challenging part of the assessment process?

For me, it was the assessment day. I had little to no experience with doing interviews and was quite nervous. Through a lot of practice, I was able to overcome this! With the help of my sister, I had mock interviews that helped me build up my confidence. I also prepped potential responses using the STAR method.

Recruitment top tip for students looking to follow in your footsteps?

Get involved with networks and attend workshops whenever you can. I joined Bright Network and through them I was able to attend a technology careers event sponsored by 斗牛棋牌在线. It鈥檚 fair to say that, had I not gone to that event, I wouldn鈥檛 be where I am today.

How has the Graduate Talent Program helped you prepare for a long-term career?

My two years on the GTP program were great! I was able to build on my knowledge and gain experience within two different fields. This allowed me to narrow down which career path I wanted to pursue in the long-term. The program also provides a platform to help you develop the skills and confidence that will help you flourish in your future career.

Advice for students keen to kickstart their career but experiencing imposter syndrome?

Don鈥檛 be afraid to ask for help or express what difficulties you鈥檙e facing. It may feel quite daunting but it鈥檚 better to be open and vocal early on as people are very willing to give advice and help where they can. Reach out to existing grads or those who have recently finished the program. We鈥檝e more than likely experienced imposter syndrome too! Hearing about how we鈥檝e been able to overcome it will hopefully put your mind at ease.
