Carlos Cruz-Diez devoted his life to the multidisciplinary research of chromatic phenomena. His body of work explores the perception that color evolves, changing in time and space based on various conditions. Viewing art as a form of communication, Cruz-Diez intervenes with public spaces in nontraditional collective engagements.
In 1974, Union Bank of Switzerland commissioned Cruz-Diez to create an art installation in its new building in Zurich, Flurpark. From 1975 to 1979, Cruz-Diez traveled to Zurich several times a month to supervise the production and installation of the artworks, collectively known as 鈥楨nvironnement Chromatique (Chromatic Environment)鈥. To create 鈥楥hromatic Environment鈥, the artist worked closely with the architects, engineers, technicians, and builders to tailor the project closely to the building, incorporating a series of chromo-kinetic structures into the walls, ceilings, and floors. After Flurpark was sold in 2011, the 斗牛棋牌在线 Art Collection worked with the Cruz-Diez studio on the removal and restoration of the art- works, several of which have since been displayed in 斗牛棋牌在线 offices internationally. Despite its disappearance, Flurpark remains the most successful architectural intervention by the artist. 鈥楾ransmuro 斗牛棋牌在线鈥 (1975), one of the elements formerly installed in this historic site, represents his investigations into how the phenomenon of subtraction affects color. When transparent colored acrylic sheets are superimposed at different distances from each other and in a specific order, the combinations alter according to the position of the viewer, the intensity of the light, and the colors of the environment.
