Federico Herrero

Federico Herrero’s formal language relies on the daily observations of the natural growth of the tropical landscape of his Costa Rican homeland, and the interconnected, dynamic flow of energy in the urban infrastructure of San José. As an heir to the abstract tradition of Latin America, he confidently developed his own personal style. While he may be best known for his large-scale, site-specific graphic murals, he also makes paintings on canvas.
Herrero’s energetic compositions, such as ‘Untitled’ (2019), consisting of brightly colored fields of varying sizes, seem to be entirely abstract. However, upon close inspection, figures or landscapes often emerge from the mosaic of geometric forms.
