In her large-scale conceptual works, Cindy Sherman transforms herself, often unrecognizably. Acting as director, designer and make-up artist, she presents herself in a variety of roles that critique the representation of women in mass media and contemporary culture.

鈥楿ntitled #209鈥, 1989, is from Sherman鈥檚 鈥楬istory Portraits鈥 series, which was created between 1988 and 1990 and devoted to reinventing classical high art and art history using color photography. Drawing inspiration from a broad scope of historical imagery from 15th century Florence to 18th century Paris, Sherman appears in costume to create a unique portrait of a lady that resembles familiar images by Italian High Renaissance 鈥淥ld Master鈥 painters, such as Rafael鈥檚 鈥楲a Fornarina鈥, ca. 1516, or Leonardo da Vinci鈥檚 鈥楳ona Lisa鈥, 1512-1515.
